Support Ocean Education and Outreach While You Shop

The Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA) funds and supports various coastal ocean education, research, and outreach programs. One of these programs is the Southeast Ocean and Coastal Acidification Network (SOCAN). 

SOCAN is a virtual network of researchers and stakeholders with the common goal of advancing knowledge of ocean and coastal acidification in the Southeast. SOCAN stakeholders include citizen scientists, shellfish industry professionals, academics, professional researchers, and more. 

Together, SOCAN and SECOORA seek to gain a better understanding of the causes of acidification to reduce its impact on the coastal environments where people live, work, and play.

Increasing Access to Ocean and Coastal Acidification Education Materials 

SOCAN is working with researchers from Coastal Carolina University on a two year project to create acidification related educational materials and opportunities for South Carolina coastal communities. Even though this project is focusing on a  small community, the impacts will be region-wide. 

As part of this project, SOCAN will be hosting a “Teacher Think-Tank” meeting in South Carolina in 2023. The meeting will focus on creating activities that teachers can use in classrooms and places like the National Estuarine Research Reserves.  Sign up for the SOCAN newsletter for future updates.  

At our Think-Tank, K-12 education teachers from across the Southeast will participate in designing lesson plans based on the information learned from the South Carolina research project. Lesson plans created for South Carolina will set the stage for education and outreach efforts across the Southeast region
